Contemporary Zimbabwe sculptures in the Dordogne Hidden in the green rolling hills of the French ‘Périgord Noir’ one finds the ‘Jardins de Cadiot’. On the slopes of a small, secluded valley the enthusiastic garden designers Anne Marie and Bernard Decottignies have created, over the years, beautifully landscaped gardens. The five acres domain comprises ten gardens, all surprisingly different and inspiring. Sculptures in the woods Right from the beginning the ´Jardins de Cadiot´ were a subtle meeting of beautiful gardens and carvings. Recently the quiet, shaded Forest Garden has been dotted with intriguing stone sculptures from Zimbabwe. Afric’Art presents a regularly changing exhibition of the work of some forty sculptors, offered for sale throughout the summer. The size of the works on display varies from hand size to about a meter. In one of the Patios a number of smaller sculptures is exhibited. Besides traditional creations inspired by mythological themes, in Cadiot one encounters many contemporary pieces, witness of a great artistic intuition. Tengenenge For ages the Shona people in Zimbabwe have been creating stone sculptures. On the basis of fair trade Afric’Art yearly buys directly from sculptors in Zimbabwe. Many of them live and work in the famous artist village of Tengenenge in the north of the country. Over the years many sculptors from Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia have settled her amidst the Zimbabwean Shona artists. The majority of our sculptures is hand carved out of Serpentine. Serpentine, a metamorphic rock, is found in a great variety of colours (brown, ochre, black, green, fruit (a lively mixture of colours)). Some of our sculptures are hewn in ‘Opaline’, a green variety, often subtly veined. You may also find pieces in ‘Springstone’, an extremely tough variety of Serpentine. (KAART VOLGT) The Jardins de Cadiot are located between Sarlat and Souillac, near the village of Carlux, some 10 km. from the highway A20 (Paris-Toulouse). Visitors can roam the grounds or find their way with the help of a garden map (in English, French, German or Dutch). On request a guided tour of the gardens can be arranged. The gardens are open from May till the end of October, 10 a.m. till 7 p.m. Admission is € 6 for adults and € 3 for children under 12 years. For groups of more than 10 persons the entrance fee is € 4,50 p.p. |
